The Bus Rapid Transit system is a project launched by the CM Shahbaz Sharif in collaboration with Istanbul’s Mayor, Dr. Kadir Topbas. This step has strengthened the Pak – Turk friendship and given Lahore a wonderful bus service based on international standards. This service is going to be a source of comfort for the disabled, elderly and women. The bus service will be handled by a highly trained and staff and an electronic ticketing system have also been put into place.
The main objective behind introducing this project is to curb the transportation issues and improve the traffic flow and the environmental situation. The present road network and the current condition of bus service created stress and extreme difficulties for the local community of Lahore. Lahore is the second largest urban city of Pakistan and involves on an average 13.5 million trips to work. The rise in population has resulted in an increase in travel demands. Hence, the initiate taken to launch this bus service would suffice the current situation. This public transport is reliable, comfortable and affordable, comes along with a separate lane for buses. The project is to be extended to other cities of Punjab. The Bus Transit will run on two corridors; Ferozepur Road line which extends 28 km and Multan road line which extends 12 km’s. The cost incurred in this project is approximately 7.7 billion.
The launch of the electronic ticketing system for Bus Rapid Transport is a very pleasing news for the people of Lahore. This step has been taken to ensure the availability of a hassle free fare system for people. Once this system is introduced, the obsolete system of charging fare through cash handling will be eliminated. Under this system, the travelers will have to procure pre-paid traveling cards. These will be for a day, week or a month’s duration. And will be used in the computerized machines, installed in these buses. We hope to see many such projects internationally collaborated that will improve the image of our country.
