World animal day is celebrated on 4th October, each year and this date was chosen because it was the feast day of Francis of Assis, who was a nature lover and patron saint of animal and environment. It was previously celebrated by Christians in churches but now animals lovers and people across the world celebrate it with great enthusiasm. Each country has its own way of celebrating this day.
“The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated”, Mahatma Gandhi.
The aim of this day is to create awareness amongst people especially children about animal rights and the kind treatment that should be kept with them. Animals have existed long before the civilization of human beings, the only thing that separate us from them is ‘consciousness’, so trying to use that in a positive way that helps providing benefit to others. It is observed that children who have pets at home have more elements of politeness and caring in their personality compare to those who don’t. This day also helps in telling about the endangered species, their reason of existent and possible solution could be drawn out from the discussions.
Next time you see a man hitting his donkey from a stick, stop him from doing such a ill treatment. Keep water and food in your garden for the birds. If you see stray dogs don’t start throwing stones, if it’s not bothering you. These are few of the possible acts that you could do on daily basis and it wont require great resources. The simple act will make you feel good about yourself.
